Energy & Resources

Back

BIOFOS regards wastewater as resource and is presently far in the transformation towards a Water Resources Recovery Facility.

Sludge from the wastewater is used to produce biogas and our energy balance has been positive since 2014. Presently our energy balance is 145%. The produced biogas is upgraded and sent to the public grid for the benefit of the population in Greater Copenhagen.

After being used for biogas production the sludge is incinerated and excess heat is also distributed in the public grid.

We aim to be CO2 neutral in 2025 and continuously work towards reducing our carbon foot print. In the period from 2013 to 2017 we have reduced our CO2 emission by 64%.

BIOFOS’ ash deposits contain Europe’s largest phosphorous "bank" and strong efforts are made towards recovery of phosphorous and metals in the ash. Presently part of our ash from incinerated sludge is used in building material.

  • Energy producing wastewater treatment

Sludge from the wastewater is used to produce biogas and our energy balance has been positive since 2014. That means, for each unit energy we buy, we sell 1,45 unit green energy to the public grid in Greater Copenhagen.

VARGA

  • VARGA

The overall objective of the VARGA project is to transform a conventional wastewater treatment plant into a recycling plant (Water Resource Recovery Facility). This will be demonstrated in full scale at Avedøre wastewater treatment plant.
